Lower Kalama River Falls

Cowlitz County, Washington

Detailed Info

The Lower Falls of the Kalama River were formerly a 7 foot cascade followed by a 15 foot cascade. In 1936 when the Kalama Falls Fish Hatchery was built, a concrete weir dam was constructed below the falls to drive fish into the adjacent fish ladder, which resulted in the majority of the falls being effectively submerged behind the dam. What remains visible today is a portion of the upper 7-foot cascade, which is situated adjacent to the upper end of the fish ladder, and by all measures it appears to be more rapids than cascades. This waterfall effectively no longer exists in anything resembling its natural state, and in turn does not meet the requirements for classification in this database.
