This is the upper of two significant waterfalls fed by seasonal snowfields north of the Russell Glacier in Seattle Park which can be seen plunging onto the western lateral moraine of the Carbon Glacier.
- PHILO FALLS is the Historical name of this waterfall.
The date of the discovery and naming of this waterfall is unknown, but the falls were described by I.C. Russell during an 1896 expedition up the Carbon River valley in "Mount Rainier: A Record of Exploration" by
Edward Meany, published in 1916.
