This very steep and very pretty cascade is the first waterfall encountered along the eastern approach to the Owyhigh Lakes. As you can see, this is an extremely photogenic waterfall (when the stream is low at least). The trailside overlook is perched about 100 feet above the bottom of the gorge. The best views of the falls are at an unfenced location, where it drops straight off, so this is definitely not someplace to screw around at. Deer Creek flows year round, this picture was taken in late August, at optimal stream flow for slow shutter photography. In the early summer, the falls become quite furious and are quite a bit more dramatic. I've recently confirmed my suspicions that there are more falls above what is pictured here, though the access to said falls would require a rather perilous bushwhack to reach (which I will, of course, undertake).
- DEER CREEK FALLS is the Adopted name of this waterfall.
These falls are accessible along the eastern approach to the East Side Trail and the Owyhigh Lakes trail from SR 123. The trailhead is located at the southern apex of a sharp turn in the road, about 6.5 miles south of Cayuse Pass in Mt. Rainier National Park. From the trailhead, located across the road from the parking area, walk down the moderately steep trail for about 1/4 mile to the fenced (for the most part) viewpoints of the falls.
