Rock Creek Falls
   Cowlitz County, Washington

[ Physical Makeup ]  [ Pictures ]  [ Maps ]  [ Update History ]

Rock Creek flows through a moderately substantial canyon as it enters Lake Merwin with State Route 503 spanning its chasm just upstream of this 108 foot tall waterfall. As the highway is situated however, there is no such indication that a significant waterfall can be seen just feet from the road. As Rock Creek passes beneath the highway, it encounters a significant promontory in the canyon floor where the adjacent cliffs force the creek to make a sharp 180-degree bend, immediately after which the stream plunges over the falls into the deeper reaches of the gorge - below which is another sharp bend of over 90 degrees.

While Rock Creek possesses a drainage area of considerable size, it is not a huge creek by any means. The falls will be at their most impressive, and most visible, during the winter and early springs months, but will sustain consistent flow for the duration of the year.

HISTORY AND NAMING INFORMATION

  • Rock Creek Falls is the Official name of this waterfall.

LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS

Exit Interstate 5 in Woodland and head east on Highway 503 towards Cougar. After traveling just over 16 miles watch for a large paved pullout on the right side of the road just before the long, high bridge across Rock Creek. Park here and walk mere feet to the fenced viewpoint where the falls can be seen despite a few obstructing trees.
