This is the only true roadside waterfall in the upper basin of French Creek. The falls cascade about 25 feet down a stair step section of the stream before flowing under the road. The topographic maps show the falls on this branch of French Creek as being a short distance upstream. I suspect this whole stretch of creek is probably one long waterfall, and if so, then this and the waterfall marked on the map (listed here as French Basin Falls # 2) should be combined to one waterfall. As it is for now, this one is probably only of interest to dedicated waterfall hunters.
- French Basin Falls 5 is the Unofficial name of this waterfall.
Located north of Detroit Lake near the Santiam Highway. From I-5 in Salem, follow Highway 22 east for about 49 miles to French Creek Road - just west of the bridge over the Breitenbush River on the west side of the town of Detroit - and turn left. Proceed for just over 4 miles, and keep left on FR # 2225. Proceed for another 1.3 miles to where the falls can be seen immediately adjacent to the road.
