REGION SUMMARY

Though it lacks the rugged relief that Washington has, the State of Oregon has a storied geologic history which has led to the creation of thousands of waterfalls. The Stratovolcano-dominated Cascade Mountains run down the middle of the state, punctuated by no less than 13 major volcanoes. Evidence of further turmoil can be found in the eastern half of the state, which is covered in places over a thousand feet deep in flood basalts erupted from massive fissure volcanoes millions of years before the Cascades existed. With volcanism responsible for virtually all of Oregon’s geology, an abundance of waterfalls is sure to follow.
