Description:

Since I first visited these falls in the spring of 1999, Cascade Falls park has undergone a facelift. Gone is the messy trail among the roots, gone are the rickety looking overlooks, and gone are the views of the lower falls. Yes, for some reason, the Fraser Valley Regional Parks Department saw it necessary to close off the viewpoints to the lower falls, rather than building a better viewing deck and improving the trail, because of alledged erosion issues. The new trail, while well graded and nice and wide leads uphill to a nice new platform overlooking the 28 meter upper falls (above), but the views of the 16 meter lower falls are gone. The new trail stays at least 10m away from the edge of the gorge, and away from all views of anything but the upper falls. The Parks Department doesn't want people climbing down to see the lower falls for liability issues, and I have been asked to forward the message, so don't climb under the fence to try to see the lower falls.

Directions:

Located in Mission, near Stave Lake. Drive east of Mission on Highway 7 for about 6 1/2 km to Sylvester Road, and turn left. Follow Sylvester Road for about 13 km to a sign pointing towards Cascade Falls on the right. Follow the road to the right until it ends in a gravel parking lot, about 1 1/2 km further. The trail starts next to an outhouse, and switches back steeply uphill for 15m, then levels off. The falls are viewed from a nice wooden platform after about 2 minutes of walking.

Photography Tips:

If you're here on a serious photography mission, be extremely wary of clear skies. The falls have a tendancy to be very contrasty when the sun is filtering through the trees. Under overcast conditions, however, this is an excellent place to waste an hour or two.

Notes for Kayakers:

The lower falls were run by the Twitch crew, and can be seen in Still Twitchin', but I don't recommend you try to reproduce their feat.
