Upper Myra Falls

Description:

Though this is a pretty waterfall, it's sort of a letdown for a 3.2 km hike, and especially disappointing if you visit big brother Myra Falls further downstream before visiting this one. Situated at the foot of the falls is an extremely inviting pool, access to which, however, is near impossible without rappelling down into the gorge below the falls. Another disappointing aspect of the falls is the viewpoint's limited views. To clearly see the falls, one must slide under the railing, and around a tree bordering the viewing deck - poorly thought out, since it would have been easy to extend the deck around the tree. Shortcomings aside, this is a nice walk (good for kids) with little elevation gain and a pretty falls. However, if you've only got a little time in the area, I highly recommend spending it at Myra Falls instead.

Directions:

On Vancouver Island, from Campbell River, follow Highway 28 west towards Gold River for 35 km, to the signed Buttle Lake / Westmin Road turnoff, just prior to crossing Buttle Lake. Continue down the Westmin Road to it's end at the Boledin Westmin Mines in another 32 km. Find the parking area, just after the road enters the forest (on either side of the road). Initially, one must follow a gravel road (a sign points the way), leading past supply sheds for the mining operation. After about 500m, the Upper Myra Falls trail branches off to the right (if you cross Myra Creek, you've gone too far). Follow the well graded trail for another 2.7 km to the viewing deck above the falls.

Photography Tips:

This is a very photogenic waterfall, so don't forget your tripod, even if it's sunny and contrasty and overall not the best photography weather. The falls are tucked in a narrow, east facing gorge, so if you come in the afternoon, chances are the falls will still be shaded.
